Kenneth McNeill

Kenneth "Ken" Augustus McNeill , OJ , (born February 18, 1918 in St. Mary ; † December 4, 2001 ) was a Jamaican medic and politician with the People's National Party (PNP).

Life

As a young man he worked as a doctor at Kingston Public Hospital, and later as a surgeon . In 1955, McNeill founded the Jamaica Cancer Society .

His political career began in 1962 when he was appointed senator for the opposition. In 1969 McNeill became a member of the House of Representatives for the constituency of East Central St. Andrew, succeeding the late Norman Manley . He remained a member of the House of Representatives after the following elections, moving to the constituency of Northwest St. Andrew for the 1976 general election. From 1972 to 1976 he served his country as health minister, later also as minister for the public service .

In 1977 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica .

In later years he worked as a hotelier and opened a holiday complex in Negril and thus participated in the development of tourism in this region.

McNeill was married and had five children. One of his sons is the politician Wykeham McNeill .
