The chain bridge in Stádlec is the last remaining chain bridge in the Czech Republic . Originally it was built in the years 1847–1848 as a crossing over the Vltava near Podolsko , dismantled 1960–1975 and rebuilt in the community of Stádlec (German Stachletz ) over the river Lužnice ( Lainsitz ). In 1989 the bridge was declared a national cultural monument.

history

The bridge was built near Podolsko ( Podolsk ) in the years 1847–1848 by the Budweiser building contractor Karl Adalbert Lanna according to plans by the engineer Friedrich Schnirch . It spanned the Vltava on the important South Bohemian road connection from Tábor to Písek .

In the 1930s, the chain bridge no longer met the demands of the increased traffic, which is why a higher concrete arch bridge was built over it.

With the construction of the Orlík dam around 1960, the bridge in the reservoir area would have been flooded. In order to preserve the technical monument, the bridge was carefully dismantled and documented. Several locations for reconstruction were available, the decision fell on the river Lužnice ( Lainsitz ) about 1.5 kilometers southeast of the community Stádlec ( Stachletz ) in the district of Tabor where it was re-opened on 25 May 1975th

As the last preserved chain bridge in the Czech Republic, it was designated a national cultural monument in 1989.

construction

The elements of the load-bearing chains consist of flat iron links ( eye sticks ). Two chains are arranged one on top of the other on both sides, and the oak beams on which the wooden roadway is placed hang from them via brackets and vertical bars. With a span of 86 m, the chains are led over two pylons designed as classicist portals (height 13 m) and cast on the banks in previously bricked abutments that have been concreted since the reconstruction . A small movable bridge under the carriageway is used for minor repairs.
