Keutenberg is the name of a village in the Dutch province of Limburg and an ascent that leads through this village.

The village consists of ten houses or farms. Keutenberg belongs to the municipality of Schin op Geul . Until 1981 the village belonged to the municipality of Wijlre . There is only one road through the village. This is only released for residents.

history

In 53 BC, the Eburones, led by Ambiorix , are said to have attacked a passing Roman army led by Gaius Aurelius Cotta. 6000 Romans are said to have fallen from the Keutenberg forest in this surprise attack. Other sources claim the battle occurred about 100 kilometers south.

Cycling

The ascent Keutenberg begins in Schin op Geul in the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul and ends on the Margraten plateau . The ascent is the steepest ascent in the Netherlands with a maximum gradient of 22% .

The Keutenberg is the penultimate ascent of the Amstel Gold Race , a semi - classic one - day race in April. It is about 12 kilometers from the finish of the race, which is located on the Cauberg .

The increase can be divided into two parts. The first, very steep part is around 600 meters long and on average around 10% steep. The second part begins at the place name sign for Keutenberg and goes up about 700 meters with about 4%.

The Keutenberg has been in the profile of the Amstel Gold Race since 1972. From 1991 to 1996 the ascent was taken out of the profile, because the narrow width in combination with the steepness of the ascent and the large number of spectators caused chaotic conditions in the caravan of team cars. Since the reintroduction of the Keutenberg, all access roads to the climb have been cordoned off for spectators.

Both Fränk Schleck 2006 and Robert Gesink 2009 placed the decisive attack in the Amstel Gold Race in the flatter part of the Keutenberg, even if Gesink had to leave the victory to his escape companion Sergei Ivanov .

Since the Keutenberg is one of the toughest and most famous climbs in the Netherlands, it is a magnet for many cycle tourists. Nevertheless, the Amstel Gold Race is currently the only bike race in which this climb is crossed.
