Kevin Hargreaves Lee

Kevin Hargreaves Lee (born November 4, 1941 in Bihar , India , † May 28, 2001 ) was an Australian Graecist .

Lee earned a BA with first class honors from the University of Newcastle (at the time still a college of the University of New South Wales ), then an MA from the University of New England with a thesis on Euripides ' Troops . In 1967 he became lecturer there, in 1972 senior lecturer, before receiving an Alexander von Humboldt scholarship in 1972/1973 for a study visit to Tübingen with Richard Kannicht . After returning to the University of New England, he worked on a dissertation on the appearances and exits in Greek tragedy, with which he received his Ph. D. in 1978. The work remained unpublished. In 1979 he took up a position as Chair of Classics at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand . In 1992 he returned to Australia to take up the position of Professor of Classics at the University of Sydney in 1992 . In 1998 he became President of the Classical Association of New South Wales and in 2000 President of the Australian Society of Classical Studies.

Lee was a recognized specialist in the tragedy poet Euripides. His commentary on the Trojans was reprinted in 1997. He has also published a commentary on Quintus von Smyrna with Alan W. James .
