Khalil Makkawi

Khalil Makkawi (born January 15, 1930 in Beirut ) is a former Lebanese diplomat .

Life

Khalil Makkawi is the son of Rosa Makkawi and Abdel Basset Makkawi. He married Zahira Sibaei in 1958 and they have a daughter and a son. He studied at the American University of Beirut , Cairo University and Columbia University in New York. In 1957 he joined the foreign service. From 1957 to 1959 he was employed in the United Nations Department. From 1961 to 1964 he was Deputy Head of Mission at UN Headquarters . From 1964 to 1967 he was First Class Secretary to Washington, DC From 1971 to 1973 he was Ministre plénipotentiaire in London. From September 14, 1973 to October 24, 1978 he was ambassador in Berlin . From October 24, 1978 to 1983, he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s . From 1979 to 1983 he was ambassador to Dublin . In 1983 he was ambassador to Rome . From 1983 to 1985 he headed the Department of Politics in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 1990 to 1994 he was head of the mission at UN headquarters . He was Vice President for the 46th session of the United Nations General Assembly . In 1995 he was chairman of UNICEF . In mid-October 2005, Fuad Siniora's government established the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee , which Khalil Makkawi chaired from October 2005 to December 2009. In 2009 he was director of the supervisory board of the American University of Beirut.
