Location of the Khumbu Glacier and the Khumbu Icefall west of Mount Everest |
The Khumbu Glacier is a glacier in the Khumbu region of Nepal .
It is fed by the slopes of Mount Everest , Lhotse and Nuptse and begins in the “ Valley of Silence ” ( Western Cwm , pronounced Kuhm ), the highest cirque in the world at an altitude of 6000 m .
At the end of the Valley of Silence, the Khumbu Glacier has a steep, about 600 meter high edge, the Khumbu Icefall ( Khumbu Icefall ). At the end of this ice break , the glacier turns from its initially north-westerly course to a south-westerly direction. This is also where the base camp for climbing Mount Everest via the southern route ( 5400 m ) is located. In the further course the glacier passes the places Gorak Shep and Lobuche to the east and ends north of Duglha .
Drain
The glacier feeds some streams that flow south of Pherishe into the Imja Khola . This in turn leads the water from the south side of the Lhotse and flows about eight kilometers later into the upper reaches of the Dudh Kosi , which finally, united with other rivers to the Koshi , flows into the Ganges in India .
