Louis Kaplan ( Ukrainian Луїс Каплан ), better known by his fighting name Kid Kaplan (born October 15, 1901 in Kiev , Kyiv Governorate , Russian Empire ; † October 26, 1970 in Norwich , Connecticut , USA ) was a Ukrainian - American boxer im Featherweight .
Childhood and youth
Kaplan came from a Jewish family in Kiev, where he was born in 1901. His family emigrated to America with him when he was five and settled in Meriden , Connecticut. There he started boxing in the New Lenox SC and became a professional boxer in 1919. He fought his first professional fights under the name "Benny Miller" because his mother did not want a boxer in the family.
Professional career
He won his first two fights in 1918. However, he lost his third and fourth fight each on points. His next four subsequent fights each ended in a "no contest".
On January 2, 1925, he won both the vacant NYSAC world title and the universal world title through a knockout victory in round 9 over Danny Kramer in Chicago . In his next 16 fights he was undefeated and gave up the belt on July 6, 1926.
Kaplan was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1986 and into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003 .
