The Kiel Christmas market traditionally takes place during Advent in downtown Kiel . At Holstenplatz and Asmus Bremer-Platz , various delicacies as well as Christmas handicrafts and decorative items are on offer.

history

The Kiel Christmas market took place for the first time in 1973. The year before, the sailing competitions of the 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Kiel , which gave the city's infrastructure a strong boost, which can still be felt today.

Christmas market 2019

The Christmas market takes place from November 25th to December 23rd, 2019.

The Kiel Christmas mugs

Various hot drinks such as punch (with or without alcohol) are served at several stalls. Since simple cardboard or plastic cups are not well suited for such drinks, ceramic cups were purchased by the Kiel city council on a trial basis in 1991.

Token

For this purpose, a mobile dishwasher was set up, with the help of which the cups could be cleaned under hygienic conditions. These cups, which were initially made available in small numbers, quickly achieved cult status among visitors to the Christmas market, so that in the following years the cups were given out for a deposit . Since then, customers have received a deposit token when they buy a hot drink, so that they can be reimbursed the deposit amount (as of 2017: two euros) when they return the empty cup.

Cup motifs

Detail: “Santa's sailing ship”, here in 2013

The motifs printed on the rim of the mug varied until 2017. A “ running gag ” could be described as the fact that every year the Kiel town hall with the typical town hall tower is part of the motif. Sometimes the motifs are alienated in the application of artistic freedom ; so are z. B. the sales booths on the town hall square never existed in the form shown.

Since 1995, the cup motif has been supplemented by other components, some of which are also understandable to non-Kielers through appropriate labeling.

Another, recurring motif was used from 2009 to 2016: a sailing ship "pulled" by a team of reindeer.

Kiel Christmas Village

Since the Advent season of 2016, another sales area has been added with the Kiel Christmas Village. This year, for the first time, newly constructed wooden huts and two bar houses were built on the town hall square on an area of around 3000 m².

As a special highlight , the motif of the above-mentioned sailing ship is taken up: three times a day a sailing cog with a team of reindeer and Christmas elves is pulled up to the roof of the town hall .
