Kihikihi is a small town in the Waipa District of the Waikato regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

Kihikihi is the name of the cicada ( Melampsalta cingulata ) in the Māori language and imitates the sounds of these animals. A large cicada was placed on the northern entrance to the village.

geography

Kihikihi is located around three kilometers southeast of Te Awamutu and around 25 km southwest of Cambridge in the wide plain of the Punui River . Hamilton is located around 27 km north of the village.

history

The place was the center of the Ngāti Maniapoto tribe in the 1860s .

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 1974 inhabitants, three more than in the 2006 census.

Infrastructure

Road traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 3 runs through Kihikihi and connects the place with Te Awamutu and Hamilton in the north and Otorohanga in the southwest.

Rail transport

The route of the North Island Main Trunk Railway passes Kihikihi 4 km to the west, but is not directly relevant for the location. Access to the rail network is possible via Te Awamutu .

Sports

National and international equestrian events such as the Eventing World Cup and the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) take place on the multi-purpose sports grounds in Kihikihi .

Personalities

  • John Rochford (1832-1893), surveyor, died at the Star Hotel and is buried in the local cemetery. He was one of the first to measure the routes of today's railway lines on the North and South Island.
  • Rewi Manga Maniapoto (1807-1894), Māori chief lived in Kihikihi , where the Rewi Maniapoto Reserve with a memorial is now.
