history

In 2004, eBay acquired a minority stake of over 28 percent in Craigslist from its current owner, Philip Knowlton, for $ 16 million . At the beginning of March 2005, initially under the umbrella of an Irish operating company, based on the Craigslist model, the group founded an online classifieds marketplace under the brand name Kijiji in order to establish a local consumer-to-consumer network alongside the existing internet auction platform . The offer was aimed at the user group of readers of local advertising journals and thus competed with existing similar web offers, such as B. Quoka and dhd24 . Media houses and publishers were accordingly alarmed when it was founded, and some of them jointly founded the classifieds portal markt.de in the same year .

In May 2005 intoko.de (emerged from marktplaats.nl) and in June 2005 opusforum.org (a classifieds market based in Wiesbaden) merged with Kijiji. Kijiji and opusforum were operated in parallel by eBay for over a year and finally bundled under the Kijiji brand in August 2006. In March 2007 kijiji.de advanced to become the online classifieds market with the widest reach in Germany.

Since the beginning of 2009, the websites have been operated by the Marktplaats company, which was founded in 1995 and has become one of the top-selling business-to-consumer Internet companies in Germany.

In September 2009 the former German Kijiji website was relaunched under the name eBay Classifieds . In March 2015, both the Austrian and the Swiss Kijiji marketplace were closed and instead links are made to other classifieds portals of the parent company on the respective websites.

Business model

The portal is financed through integrated advertising and income from the advertisements.

Competitor

On the German-speaking market, the company competes with the classifieds portals quoka .de, dhd24 .com, markt.de , kleinangebote.de, kalaydo , Meinestadt and Stadtlist.de, among others . In Austria, willhaben would be a strong competitor who is one of the most visited websites in Austria. However, eBay is not active in the Austrian classifieds market.

The Craigslist is particularly widespread in English-speaking countries, in which eBay again held a 28.4 percent stake. However, eBay sold its shares back to Craigslist in 2015 after a lawsuit. Craigslist is also active on the German market, but has almost no success there. eBay Classifieds is not represented in the US, whereas Kijiji is very successful in Canada. Kijiji was renamed eBay Classifieds in Germany.
