Kim Byong-hwa (born May 16, 1936 in Osaka , Japan ) is a North Korean conductor .

Kim grew up as Zainichi in Japan. In Japan he went to a North Korean school in Kobe . He belonged to the first year of the school's graduation. In 1960 he went to North Korea with his Japanese wife and studied conducting at the University of Music and Dance in Pyongyang . His wife adopted a Korean name and became a singer at the National Theater ( 국립 예술 극장 ). In 1964 he became a conductor at the National Theater , in 1969 at the National Symphony Orchestra of North Korea ( 조선 국립 교향악단 Chosŏn kungrip kyohyang aktan ). On August 18, 2000, he conducted the North Korean Symphony Orchestra in Seoul , when he performed for the first time in South Korea after the Korean War . He is a specialist for the Korean composer Yun I-sang .
