Kim Chi-ha (born February 4, 1941 in Mŏkp'o in the province of South Chŏlla ) is a South Korean writer.

Life

His real name is Kim Yŏng-il ( 김영일 , 金 英 一 ). During middle school, his father got a job in Wonju and Kim changed schools. After graduating from Chungdong High School in Seoul, he began studying aesthetics at Seoul National University in 1959 . A year later, the subject of aesthetics was transferred to the humanities faculty. In the new faculty he took part in a theater group and soon joined the student movement . For this reason, his studies were not straightforward, he was given leave of absence, re-enrolled, excluded for an indefinite period, and re-accepted. In 1964 in particular, he took part in the demonstration against the subservient diplomacy of the Park Chung-hee regime towards Japan , was arrested and spent four months in Sŏdaemun Prison. The 70s were the most intense and difficult times for him. After his debut with The Way of the Yellow Earth in 1969, he was convicted several times for his publications. B. in connection with the case of the Five Bandits , the case of vulgar language , the case of the Democratic Student Union and the case of 1974 . He spent a total of seven years in prison. He was even sentenced to death for allegedly violating the National Security Act and inciting civil war . His case became an international scandal and sparked a worldwide movement for his amnesty . In 1975 the Afro-Asian Writers' Conference decided to award him the Lotus Prize and sent President Park a letter demanding Kim's release.

He was finally released in 1980 thanks to sustained protests led by domestic and foreign intellectuals. A year later he received the Lotus Prize and at the same time the Bruno Kreisky Prize for his services to human rights . In the same year he also became the World Congress of Poets with the price as The Great Poet crowned. 22 years after the publication of the first volume of poetry, he published With Burning Thirst in 1982 . This was followed by several volumes such as Five Bandits , Erin , Black Mountain, White Room , Looking Up to the Star Field and The Agony of the Middle .

After his release, he began to reinterpret ancient teachings and traditional Korean culture and promoted the spiritual movement for coexistence and peace that seeks a new light for civilization and an alternative. This change in the way of thinking of Kim Chi-ha, which can be described as the philosophy of life, was expressed in concrete terms in the essay volumes Life , Plea for Ongchi , Beloved and in the text Netzmich von der Lebensbewegung . His "Philosophy of Life" developed into the Yullyŏ doctrine and "Movement for the New Man". The Yullyŏ Scientific Society was founded by him.
