Kim Jong-gil

Kim Jong-gil (born November 5, 1926 in Andong , Kyŏngsangbuk-do , † April 1, 2017 ) was a South Korean poet and writer .

Life

Jong-gil (his real name was Kim Ch'i-gyu [김치규 | 金致逵]) was born in 1926 in Andong, North Kyŏngsang Province . He graduated from Korea University with a degree in English and then studied English literature at the University of Sheffield in England. He served as the chairman of the Korean Poets Association and lectured at Korea University. He made his official debut in 1947 when his poem "Tür" (문) won a literary prize. Since that time he has been active both as a poet and as a critic.

Jong-gil is widely recognized in the Korean literary world as one of the greatest modern poets. His poetry is primarily characterized by clarity, transparency, and the skillful exploration of the power of poetic representation. The idea of representation has an almost metaphysical value for the poet, which in his opinion enables both poet and reader to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of truth. His lyrical method can therefore only be fully understood when viewed in the context of his attitude towards life and his creative genius.

Jong-gil's works contain both ideas heralded by Imagism - a lyrical modernist movement advocated by poets such as Amy Lowell , HD, and Ezra Pound - as well as the traditional Hansi style and the spirit of the Sŏnbi (scholars in the premodern Korea). But in contrast to other poets of imagism, his works exude a classic and traditional elegance, which in turn gives his works a certain touch of decency and completeness. This traditional elegance is best seen in the poet's emotional reluctance and detachment from the external world. Kim also focused on the virtue of decency to convey grief and suffering.
