List of birds in California

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The crested quail ( Callipepla californica ) is the official state bird of California .

The List of Birds in California lists the species of birds that are or have been found in California . It follows the Official California Bird List published by the California Birds Records Committee (CBRC) as of February 2, 2014.

The list includes a total of 657 species, 11 of which are not originally native to California, but are now established. Two of these neozoa have since been exterminated, with one of these two species being deliberately reintroduced in California at the moment, but not yet fully native again.

The order of the species in this list is aligned with that of the Check-List of North American Birds of the North American Ornithologists' Union (7th edition).

The bird life of California

According to Jules Evens and Ian Tait, authors of an authoritative introduction to the birds of California ( Introduction to California Birdlife , 2005), making more than 600 occurring in the area of the State of California birds about three quarters of the entire United States occurring bird species. Evens and Tait attribute this unprecedented diversity to a combination of favorable climatic conditions and the diverse land surface of the state in the far west of the USA, which is favorable to a large number of different habitats . With its extremely heterogeneous landscape forms - from the dry desert to the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and the fertile Californian long valley to the temperate rainforest on the northern Pacific coast - California offers an above-average number of different habitats for birds. California is the only region on the mainland of the United States that is designated as an Endemic Bird Area .

Endemic

Two bird species and 60 subspecies are endemic to California , so they only occur there. The island jay  ( Aphelocoma insularis ) occurs only on Santa Cruz Island , an island of only 245 square kilometers in the Channel Islands National Park . It differs from its closest relative on the mainland, the western bush jay ( Aphelocoma californica ) in its size, color, voice and nesting behavior. The distribution area of the yellow-billed elster ( Pica nuttalli ) is limited to the Californian long valley and the valleys of the coastal mountains south of San Francisco. In addition to the Nuttall woodpecker ( Picoides nuttallii ), it is one of two Californian endemics named after the English zoologist Thomas Nuttall (1786–1859), who was one of the first Europeans to describe the fauna and flora of California. The California condor ( Gymnogyps californianus ), extinct in the wild from 1987 to 1992, has been reintroduced into the wild since 1992 as part of the largest conservation breeding program in the United States. While the condor was endemic to California for a long time, it is now found not only in Big Sur and the Pinnacles National Park of  California, but also in northeastern Arizona and in the north of the Mexican state of Baja California .

Neozoa

Of the 657 bird species found in California, 9 belong to the neozoa , the non-native species:

Four of these species (chukar chicken, pheasant, white-tailed ptarmigan and turkey) were introduced as game animals. Of these, the pheasant, of which the California Fish and Game Commission imported a total of 5,000 animals by 1916, has achieved the widest distribution.
