The blue-throated cottage warbler ( Sialia mexicana ) is a medium-sized songbird in the thrush family.

The male is gray on the belly, bright blue on the top and throat and orange-brown on the chest. The female is less colorful and is brown on the chest and gray on the back, throat and bonnet.

Distribution area:
yellow - only breeding season
blue - only outside the breeding season
green - all year round

The blue-throated warbler breeds in semi-open landscapes in western North America, but not in desert areas. It competes with other birds such as house sparrows , starlings or swamp swallows for nesting sites.

The northern populations move south in winter, whereas the birds in the south are resident birds .

This bird catches insects in flight or from a perch. The diet is supplemented with berries.

Subspecies

There are six known subspecies:

  • Sialia mexicana occidentalis Townsend, JK , 1837 - This subspecies occurs in southwestern Canada to northern Baja California in northwestern Mexico.
  • Sialia mexicana bairdi Ridgway , 1894 - This subspecies is distributed from the inner west of the USA to Sonora and Chihuahua in northwest Mexico.
  • Sialia mexicana jacoti Phillips, AR , 1991 –- This subspecies is found in the south-central part of and the northeast of Mexico.
  • Sialia mexicana amabilis Moore, RT , 1939 - This subspecies is common in north-central Mexico.
  • Sialia mexicana nelsoni Phillips, AR , 1991 - This subspecies is only found in central Mexico.
  • Sialia mexicana mexicana Swainson , 1832 - The nominate form is common in southern central Mexico.

Etymology and history of research

William Swainson described the blue-throated hut singer under the current name Sialia Mexicana . He gave the plateau of Mexico as the location of the type specimen . It was also Swainson who first introduced the new genus Sialia for the red-throated hut warbler ( Sialia sialis ( Linnaeus , 1758)) (Syn: Sialia azurea ). This name goes back to an unidentified bird, whose call Athenaios and Hesychios described as "sialis σιαλις ". The specific epithet »mexicana« stands for Mexico. "Nelsoni" was awarded in honor of the zoologist Edward William Nelson , "jacoti" in honor of the collector Edward C. Jacot. "Bairdi" is a dedication to Spencer Fullerton Baird . "Amabilis, amare" is the Latin word for "lovable, to love". "Occidentalis, occidens, occidentis" is also of Latin origin and means "western, west".
