British America denotes the English (1607 to 1707) or British (1707 to 1783) territories in North America (including Bermuda ), Central America , the Caribbean and Guyana from 1607 to 1783. Formally, the British colonies in North America until 1776 were called themselves the Thirteen Colonies declared independent, known as British America and the British West Indies . Thereafter, the term British North America was used to describe the rest of the British colonies in North America.

After the Peace of Paris , which ended British participation in the Seven Years War , the British colony was expanded significantly at the expense of Spain and France. At the beginning of the American War of Independence in 1775, the British Empire comprised twenty colonies north and east of the viceroyalty of New Spain (now Mexico and western USA). East and West Florida were ceded to Spain in the Peace of Paris (1783) , which ended the American Revolution. The remaining continental colonies formed the Dominion of Canada in 1867 . In 1949 the Dominion Newfoundland was united with Canada.
