The tiger wood warbler ( Setophaga tigrina , Syn .: Dendroica tigrina ) is a small bird from the genus of the wood warbler ( Setophaga ) in the family of the wood warbler (Parulidae).

features

The crown on the yellow head of the male Tiger Forest Warbler is dark gray to black. It has hazel-brown plumage below the eyes to the ears. There are large white wing rods on the wing covers. The yellow underside plumage, which tapers white towards the rear, is interspersed with black stripes. The upper side plumage is olive green to dark brown. In the photo, the rear underside plumage and the tail appear pale purple due to the sunlight. In truth, this is not the case with either the male or the female. Overall, the female has duller plumage, the yellow components can only be seen pale, and the white wing rods on the wing covers and the hazel-brown spot on the sides of the head are missing.

nutrition

They feed mainly on insects , which they not only find on the ground or in the foliage, but also catch with a nimble and agile flight while flying. They play an important role for the North American forests, as they also devour caterpillars of harmful insects. The juice of berries and fruits is mainly absorbed in winter when the tiger warbler drills a small hole with its small pointed beak.

Reproduction

On a branch of a spruce or fir tree, the tiger warbler builds a small, bowl-shaped nest that is open at the top and consists of feathers, hair, twigs, grass and other parts of plants. The female lays four to eight brown or gray spotted white eggs in the nest.

Occurrence and threat

Tiger Warbler often inhabit mixed coniferous forests or spruce forests in North America . Other habitats are areas with a high tree population. The distribution area extends, among other things, from the forests in the north of Canada over Alberta to the Atlantic coast. The tiger warbler migrates to the Caribbean and Central America in winter . He can also be found as a rare guest in Western Europe .

The tiger forest warbler is particularly threatened by the clearing and destruction of its habitats. It also appears to be sensitive to pesticides , which are used against curlers , for example , to prevent damage to the Norway spruce ( Picea abies ).
