history

The Cesar & Helene was built at the Reiherstieg shipyard under the direction of Joachim Eduard von Somm and was launched there in 1856 with hull number 17. The owner was the trading house Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & son of the Hamburg businessman Johan Cesar Godeffroy . The sailing ship was named after members of the Godeffroy family.

The brig transported in liner service mainly expatriates and trade goods from Hamburg to Australia and Chile . A trip to Nikolayevsk on the Amur in 1862 was extraordinary . On July 15, 1864, several explosions of saltpeter occurred in a warehouse in the port of New York . The rigging of the Cesar & Helene caught fire, as a result of which the ship burned down to the waterline and was destroyed.
