Kim Jonghyun (born April 8, 1990 in Seoul , South Korea ; † December 18, 2017 ), better known as Jonghyun , was a South Korean singer-songwriter, radio host and author. He was also a member of the K-pop band Shinee .

Career

He made his debut with Shinee on May 25, 2008. Shinee released six Korean-language albums and another five aimed at the Japanese market. The most recent was released in early 2017. Shinee sold hundreds of thousands of records, the band members were considered trendsetters and are known as "the princes of K-Pop".

The albums The Story of Light Part 1, 2 & 3 were released on May 28th, June 11th and June 25th and included one final song ( Lock You Down ) which included Jonghyun's voice.

SM Entertainment announced Jonghyun's final album Poet | on January 19, 2018 Artist for January 24th.

Private life

Jonghyun dropped out of high school in 10th grade to pursue a music career.

In April 2013, Jonghyun was involved in a car accident and injured his nose. SM Entertainment reported that he had an operation. He suspended most of his group's promotions during their third album, despite participating in the final week.

In December 2013, Jonghyun changed his Twitter profile picture to one indicating support for the LGBT community and received defamatory responses from Ilbe Storehouse members who allegedly claimed to be members of the Shinee fan club.

Jonghyun had an apartment studio in Cheongdam-dong for two days; rented in the Gangnam district of southeast Seoul and checked in on December 18, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. local time. At 4:42 pm, Jonghyun's older sister, Kim So-dam, called 911 after receiving a series of messages on KakaoTalk that said, “Please let me go. Tell me i did well Farewell ”. He was last seen in a shop next to his apartment.

Jonghyun was found unconscious at 6:10 pm by police and rescue workers. He was taken to Konkuk University Hospital as soon as possible , where he suffered cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed. Jonghyun was pronounced dead at 6:32 pm at the age of 27. He belongs to Club 27 . According to investigations, he died by suicide of carbon monoxide poisoning .

Jonghyuns good friend Nine9 published on the evening of December 18 the suicide note , which they received on 9 December.

Reactions

After Jonghyun's death, his name became a trending topic on Twitter, as did the hashtags “ #StayStrongShawols” and “ #YouDidWellJonghyun ”. Jonghyun's death opened discussions about the tough and competitive nature of the entertainment business in South Korea, as well as mental health.

Jonghyun's appearance on the Night Goblin variety show was due to air on December 24, 2017, but JTBC decided not to air it. Shinee had planned to give a series of concerts in Japan in February 2018, but this has led to discussions about whether they should be postponed.

On December 30, 2017, Jonghyun debuted at number 2 on Billboard's Social 50 chart with 425,000 Wikipedia views, an increase of 17,974 percent.

Commemoration

Many musicians and producers around the world mourned Jonghyun's death. Labelmates Exo, TVXQ and Taeyeon from Girls' Generation paid tribute to him at their concerts. MBC Radio was planning a special memorial broadcast for Jonghyun on December 21st regarding his long-running radio show "Blue Night" but decided to cancel it due to "the possible social impact of the voice of the deceased idol being re-aired ." SM Entertainment commemorated Jonghyun's death with the posthumous release of "Dear My Family" as a charity single with Jonghyun and other artists on the label. Artists from the said label like Exo, Red Velvet and NCT 127 attended the year-end music shows wearing a black ribbon with aquamarine “RIP JH” embroidery.
