KakaoTalk ( Korean 카카오 톡 ), also KaTalk ( Korean 카톡 ([ka tɔːk])) is an instant messaging - service for use on smartphones and tablets . The associated app is available for the Android and iOS operating systems. KakaoTalk is also available in simplified versions for Windows and macOS . Support for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile ended on December 15, 2016.

As an alternative to SMS , KakaoTalk allows its users to send and receive messages, photos, videos and voice messages. Telephone calls and conferences with up to five participants are also possible via the mobile data network.

history

The Seoul- based company Kakao Corporation published KakaoTalk on March 18, 2010. With this app, Kakao Corp. compete with Facebook and Twitter . Cocoa Corp. is one of the top Android developers. In May 2014, Kakao Corp. announced to merge with the also South Korean company Daum Communications , whereby Kakao Corp. will hold the greater share of the newly created company.

Functions

KakaoTalk enables its users to send messages, emoticons , pictures and videos to a person or in a group chat . According to the developer, the communication is encrypted. It is possible to find other users via the KakaoTalk ID without knowing their mobile phone number. There is also the Plus Friend function , which provides the latest news from personal favorite artists. The most popular KakaoTalk users include Girls' Generation , Super Junior and Shinee .

Since March 2017, KakaoTalk has also been providing a mobile payment service with Kakao Pay . As with the competitors WeChat and Line , this can be used to transfer money.
