Kim had his first international success at the Junior World Championships in 2013 in Klobenstein . There he won the bronze medal in the 2 × 500 m run. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, he started the World Cup in Calgary for the first time and finished tenth and sixth over 500 m in the B group. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he came 21st in the 2 × 500 m run. The following year he came in 14th place in the 2x500 m run at the individual distance world championships in Heerenveen and in 17th place at the sprint world championship in Astana . He also won the 500m and gold medal in the team sprint at the 2015 World Junior Championships in Warsaw . In February 2017 he ran at the individual distance world championships in Gangwon on the 22nd place over 500 m. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he finished 12th over 500 m. In the 2018/19 season he achieved his first podium positions in the World Cup in Hamar with third and second place each over 500 m. At the individual distance world championships in Inzell in 2019 , he won the silver medal in the team sprint together with Cha Min-kyu and Kim Tae-yun . He also achieved 13th place over 500 m there.
In the 2018/19 season, Kim finished second and third in Hamar over 500 m and at the end of the season reached eighth place in the overall World Cup over 500 m. At the individual distance world championships in Inzell in 2019 , he won the silver medal in the team sprint. In addition, he came there on the 13th place over 500 m.
At South Korean championships he won gold in the 2 × 500 m run in 2016 and 2019, in the sprint all-around event in 2015 and in the 500 m in 2017.
