It houses one of ten parishes of the Macedonian Orthodox Church in Germany. The church building is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra , who is venerated in Orthodoxy .

history

Macedonian guest workers made the decision to plant a church in 1989, which led to the formation of a board of directors. In 1994, the Mainz parish hosted the first meeting of all Macedonian parishes in Europe. The then Metropolitan Bishop Gorazd took over the presidency of the new European diocese. The congregation met for several years in the chapel of the St. Bernhard Church in Mainz-Bretzenheim , where they enjoyed hospitality. On September 26th, 2009 the laying of the foundation stone of the own church building was celebrated.

The catchment area of the Macedonian Orthodox community of Saint Nicholas extends around 150 kilometers around Mainz and includes 3500 to 4500 members. On June 6, 2015, the new building was inaugurated in the presence of the Macedonian ambassador from Berlin and the Macedonian head of the church , Archbishop Stefan (bourgeois Stojan Veljanovski ), as well as the former mayor and building officer Norbert Schüler . Outside Macedonia, there are church buildings of this architectural form of the cross-domed church in Byzantine style only in Switzerland and Sweden .
