history

In 1937 in what was then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia , preparations began to build the church. At that time Patriarch Varnava (Rosić) had decided with the responsible church committee that it is a memorial church for the murdered King Aleksandar I Karađorđević and the fallen soldiers in the First World War and that it will also house an ossuary . The President of the Church Committee was the Archimandrite of the Monastery of Jošanica Teodosije (Tošić).

South elevation of the church

In 1938 the church was built during the reign of King Petar II Karađorđević and the tenure of Patriarch Gavrilo V (Dožić) and was completed in October of the same year. The church was built thanks to donations from Siokovac residents. At that time the village belonged to the parish of the Jošanica Monastery with the then parish priest Stanko Lazarević.

Although the church was completed in 1938, the first Holy Liturgy in the church took place on February 12, 1942, the holiday of the Three Hierarchs during World War II .

The Church of St. Sava was solemnly consecrated by the bishop of the Šumadija eparchy, Valerijan (Stefanović) in 1959 in what is now socialist Yugoslavia .

The current priest of the church is Ivan Jovanović. The Siokovac Slava is the second day of Pentecost .

architecture

West view of the church with the fresco of St. Sava

The single - nave cross-domed church with a semicircular altar - apse in the east, a round dome over the middle of the nave at the intersection of the side arms of the church and a small church tower in the west, is built in the style of the Morava school , a style of the Serbian-Byzantine architectural style.

It is designed in the form of a trikonchos and has a main entrance in the west above which there is a patronage fresco of St. Sava and a side entrance on the north side.

To some extent it is a copy of the medieval church of St. Stephen the First Martyr in Kruševac . The stripes on the outside facade of the church are striking.

Typically for Orthodox churches, the church has a (wooden) iconostasis with icons . It is currently not frescoed inside . In the interior of the church there are two marble slabs with golden Cyrillic letters on which reports about the construction of the church and the ktitors of the church are given.
