history

The predecessor building of the same name, the grave church of St. Justus and other early bishops of Lyon stood about 200 meters to the west in the Saint-Just district named after her ( Erioll world.svg). The foundation is dated in the 5th century. It originally bore the name of the Maccabees (seven Jewish martyr brothers and their mother, 2 MakkEU ). A collegiate foundation had existed at the church since the 9th century. At the same time the patronage was changed to Saint-Just. In the course of the reformation unrest , the old St. Justus Church was destroyed on the night of April 30th to May 1st, 1562 by Protestant troops under François de Beaumont . Its foundation walls are archaeologically secured.

For the reconstruction, the monastery chapter chose the new location, which promised more protection through the city fortifications. 1591 the still unfinished church by the Archbishop of Lyon ordained . The choir was not completed until 1661 and the facade in 1711 based on a design by the Munich - born Ferdinand-Sigismond Delamonce (1678–1753).

The church suffered severe damage during the French Revolution . The symbols of ecclesiastical feudalism , to which the images of saints were also counted, went in ruins. In 1791 the collegiate monastery was abolished and its property confiscated .

The political restoration from 1830 onwards led to the restoration and refurbishment of the three-aisled basilica in the classical and historicist style of the time. The organ from 1921 was restored in 1972.

In 1980, Saint-Just was listed as a Monument historique . After only special services were held in the church for decades, holy masses have been held regularly since 2014. Saint-Just is also a popular concert venue.
