San Bastiaun Church (Zuoz)

The church of San Bastiaun on the western outskirts of Zuoz in the Upper Engadine under the patronage of St. Sebastian (on turkey Bastiaun , pronounced "Baschtiäm" () with an emphasis on the long ä!) Is an Evangelical - Reformed church under protection of the canton of Grisons .
History and equipment
After the Reformation was accepted in Zuoz in 1556 under Gian Travers , San Bastiaun was given up as a preaching church in favor of San Luzi . After centuries of profane use, it has been in political possession since 1963, and has been archaeologically examined and restored. A church right of use applies.
The church, built in the Romanesque style, was first mentioned in 1472, but its structure should go back at least to the middle of the 13th century. To the left of the church is a pre-Christian stone as a pagan fertility symbol , which has apparently been inculturated .
The nave and choir are each square in shape and follow a numerical symbolism composed of the numbers 3 and 4. In the choir, which is completely filled with frescoes and in the middle of which Christ is enthroned as Pantocrator , the windows made by Gian Casty deal with the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
Church organization
The Evangelical Reformed Regional Church of Graubünden runs San Bastiaun as a preaching place (only used irregularly in summer) for the parish Zuoz-Madulain within the Colloquium VII Engiadin′Ota-Bregaglia-Poschiavo-Surses .
