history

Peace Church in Liblar

The first plans for the construction of a Protestant church in Lechenich date from 1958, when a church building association was founded and collected funds for the church to be built. At that time, Lechenich and the surrounding villages belonged to the Protestant parish in Liblar, which still maintains the Friedenskirche , built in 1925/26 . After the Second World War , the number of Protestant parishioners increased sharply due to the strong influx of displaced persons and refugees in the Rhineland and also in Erftstadt, so that the number exceeded the capacities of the Friedenskirche in Liblar. In Advent 1946, a Protestant service was held for the first time in Lechenich in the courtroom of the Lechenich District Courtinstead, in the following years there were services alternating between Oberliblar, Gymnich , Weilerswist and Lechenich. In 1960 there were 6,000 Protestant Christians in the community of Liblar, so a second parish with a community of 3,200 Christians was set up for Lechenich that year. The services took place alternately in the schools in Lechenich, Gymnich and Friesheim , and from September 1963 a newly built rectory was also available in Lechenich.

The planning for the church and the associated community buildings by the architect couple Anneliese Vossbeck-Krahwinkel and Ulrich Vossbeck began in 1965. The buildings were inaugurated on December 18, 1966, the consecration of the bells supplied by the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock took place on Reformation Day , October 31, 1966. in 1968, in the Liblarer parish line the Abpfarrung decided the Lechenicher community was the church leadership, the Protestant community Lechenich with approval on January 1, 1969 an independent municipality. The further growth of the parish led to the establishment of a second parish within the parish in 1977, and in 1982 a parish center with a church service hall was built in Gymnich, which was expanded into today's Emmaus Church . In 1983 the third place of worship for the community with the community center in Friesheim was built .

The church and the community center consist of several different large individual buildings, which are arranged in a U-shape on the property and thus form a small inner courtyard. They are clad with red-brown clinker and have flat roofs . The bell tower , built from white concrete slabs, flanks the ensemble on the southwest corner of the church building on the street side and towers above it so that it appears as a focal point in the street structure.

The church itself is made up of several largely windowless structures and represents the highest part of the complex (with the exception of the tower). The entrance portal is located on the north side in a separate entrance building with a small anteroom, which leads to the fully clinker-bricked one at the northwest corner Worship room. The south side consists of the singing and organ grandstands as a separate structure with flanking vertical windows, which contains the church organ created by Willi Peter in 1973 . It is slightly raised and separated from the prayer room by a parapet. This is followed by the place of baptism , which takes up the entire south-east corner and also represents a building with a high vertical window slot. The chancel is located on the east side of the church and, as a structure in the form of a space shaft, dominates the rest of the church. It is illuminated by a window front that is located above the church hall. Further vertical windows, mostly covered by the church interior by the individual structures, are located at the seams of the structure and the main building. The tower is also integrated by window bridges.
