Saint Clement

The under monument protection standing Roman Catholic parish church of St. Clement , the church in Herrig , a district of Erftstadt .

history

As early as 1463, the Herrig parish had a church that was consecrated to St. Clement . As a branch of St. Kilian in Lechenich , it was incorporated into the monastery of St. Aposteln in Cologne and was administered by a vice curate until secularization . The cemetery was expanded in 1891. From 1892 to 1893, the Cologne government builder and architect Heinrich Krings built a new brick church in neo-Gothic style, which retained the patronage of the old church.

It was badly damaged in an air raid in 1943 and by other wartime effects in early 1945 during World War II . Due to this war damage, the architects Hans Hansen and Karl Friedrich Liebermann rebuilt today's church in 1952, incorporating the preserved walls of the previous building. The foundation stone of the old church with the inscription LAPIS PRIMARIUS 1892 was also preserved.

The church was completely restored in 1996/1997.

Building description

St. Clemens nave and choir

The white plastered church with the west tower is flanked by two pent roof-roofed extensions. The church portal is located in the tower with a gable roof is covered. The sacristy and the parish hall with several rooms are located in an extension of the church building .

For the single-nave church, a flat wooden ceiling was chosen in both the nave and the choir instead of a vaulted ceiling. The pointed arches resting on the wall templates divide the nave into three bays . A belt arch marks the transition from the nave to the choir area, which is raised by two steps.

The four ogival glass windows in the nave are the work of the Cologne artist Hans Hansen .

The organ on the floating organ loft was supplied by the Fabritius organ workshop from Kaiserswerth in 1937 . The organ building company Weimbs took over the necessary repairs after the Second World War and in 1952 the installation in the new building and in 1990 a general overhaul.

Of the three bells, the oldest is the Marienglocke (Ave Maria) from 1935 from the bell foundry in Apolda . The second bell was cast in 1949 and the peace bell (Regina pacis) in 1957 in the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher . On the nameless bell from 1949, the names of the donors and the coat of arms of the cathedral courtyard are cast with the letter DC, an abbreviation for Cologne cathedral chapter as a reminder of the former owners of the cathedral courtyard in Herrig.
