St. Barbara

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Barbara is located in Liblar , a district of Erftstadt in the Rhein-Erft district .

history

At the turn of the century, the parish of St. Alban in Liblar had grown so much through the influx of workers who were employed in the lignite industry that the pastor had already advised the archbishop's authority in 1901 that the new miners' settlement "Donatusdorf" in the To build a new church for the Catholics near the Liblar train station . In 1910 a building association was founded in Donatusdorf, which collected money for the construction of the church and purchased a building plot. A church building association had also been founded for the Protestants in 1911, which was then able to build a church, the Peace Church, in 1926 . However, the First World War prevented the start of construction in Donatusdorf, which was planned for 1914. Therefore, since 1918, the Catholic church service has been held on Sundays in a classroom of the local school. After the First World War, a Catholic church was built in Köttingen, which also belongs to the parish of St. Alban . The Donatusdorf, renamed Oberliblar in 1922, received a wooden barracks as an emergency church in 1925 . The service was held in this provisional facility until after the Second World War . It was not until 1952 that the foundation stone for a new church could be laid on Bergstrasse, which was completed in 1953 after almost a year of construction and was the patron saint of miners, St. Barbara , was consecrated.

description

The Cologne architect Paul Noven realized a simple church in the basilica style with low side aisles, a higher central nave and a towering side church tower . The facades are made of hard-fired clinker bricks . Round windows break through the upper arcade , rectangular pairs of windows the side walls. The west and east walls of the southern part of the church are almost completely glazed with high ribbon windows, while the south wall has no windows. On the north side of the entrance there is a large walled rose window above the four-door portal with a segmental arch in front . Sound openings are made in the gable of the tower built on the west side . On the west side, the sacristy and rectory are connected.

Choir area

A small anteroom leads into the interior of the church. The wide central nave directs the view to the altar in the choir, which is three steps above the level of the nave.

The hanging cross above the altar is a work by the artist Toni Zenz . The cafeteria and the lectern made from Westerwald Trachyt are also works by the artist. On each side of the choir there are five floor-to-ceiling windows in bright colors with scenes from the Bible, which the glass painter Jakob Schwarzkopf from Trier created in 1967.

The west window shows scenes from the Old Testament . In the middle of the west window, King David is enthroned over Moses and the burning bush . The twelve men surrounding him symbolize the Twelve Tribes of Israel , the seven-armed menorah, the seven-armed candlestick in the temple in Jerusalem and the two tablets of the Law the Ten Commandments .

The east window shows scenes from the New Testament based on the Revelation of John . In the middle of the window he created a presentation of the Heavenly Jerusalem . The 24 elders surround Christ seated on the throne. The lamb at his feet, surrounded by the evangelist symbols , rests on the book closed with seven seals .

Organ loft

In the east aisle there is a tabernacle made of chased brass, a work by Jakob Riffeler . On the front is a scene from the Last Supper with the words: HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM (this is my body). Representations of Christian symbols, ears of wheat and grapes are arranged on both sides, pelican and phoenix on the sides .

On the corner pillar with the foundation stone AD MCMLII (In the year of the Lord 1952) stands a wooden figure of the church patroness St. Barbara. On the wall between the five pairs of windows is a cycle of pictures by the artist Egino Weinert , with a crucifixion painting by the artist Jan Schlesinger inserted into it. The baptistery is located at the north end of the aisle . Three fish are highlighted on the lid of the baptismal font designed by Riffeler. A bronze dove rises from the crystal knob. The windows of the baptistery are the work of the artist Jakob Schwarzkopf.

In the west aisle there is a modern Madonna on the side of the altar. It is a gift from the parish of St. Alban for the consecration of the church in 1953. The ground floor tower floor is designed as a Marienkapelle. The statue of the Virgin Mary is of unknown origin. The colored windows refer to the life of Mary. The organ gallery, supported by two pillars, has a coffered ceiling . The organ with 15 registers was delivered in 1955 by the organ building company Romanus Seifert in Kevelaer . There are five bells hanging in the bell room: Marien's bell, Donatus bell, Joseph's bell, Barbara bell and Matthias bell, which are tuned in the tone sequence of the Latin Te Deum . They were cast by the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher .
