St. Joseph Otto-Hue-Strasse

The Catholic parish church of St. Joseph is located in Köttingen , a district of Erftstadt in the Rhein-Erft district .

history

Until after the First World War , Köttingen was a small town that politically belonged to the municipality of Liblar and ecclesiastically to the parish of St. Alban . After 1920 the town grew so much with the influx of workers who were employed in the Rhenish lignite industry that the parish of St. Alban needed to build a new Catholic church in Köttingen. It was built according to plans by the Cologne government master builder Mertzenich in the center of the housing estate built between 1921 and 1923 by the "Housing Association for the Rhenish Lignite District". According to an agreement with the construction company, they took over the construction costs, while the parish of Liblar made the property available. After the foundation stone was laid in 1922, construction was delayed during the inflationary period . The church was not completed until 1924 and consecrated to the patron saint of workers, St. Joseph .

The church, in World War II was made in 1942 during an air attack by incendiary bombs and burned, could be restored to 1948 for worship. During the years of the reconstruction of the church, the service took place in the St. Anna Chapel on Peter-May-Straße or in the hall of an inn.

In 1952 St. Joseph was separated from St. Alban and made parish rectorate.

Building description

St. Joseph

The brick church with a nave, a lower choir closed on three sides, a side aisle and a tower integrated on the north side is almost parallel to Mittelstrasse and at the beginning of Otto-Hue-Strasse. On the northern side of the tower is a porch with a high gable, the wide arches of which are closed by two colorfully glazed portals, after the porch with the original main entrance was included in the interior. A figure of Mary stands on a console between the arched openings, above three small arched windows. The porch merges into a flatter chapel porch on its western side. On the west side of the church, a slate concrete canopy with wide stairs was placed in front of the church between the chapel and the sacristy. On this side is the main entrance, the two-winged bronze portal of which Jakob Riffeler created in 1975 with reliefs from the history of Köttingen.

On the west side, three arched windows of the nave are visible above the canopy. On the southern side of the tower, under the sound openings, the original height of the church roof can still be seen, which was built lower during the restoration in 1945. The portal leads into the porch, which was designed as a war memorial chapel through a stained glass window with a representation of a crucifixion group . The names of the fallen are recorded on marble tablets . The original image of the chapel, a Pietà , has been decorating the altar of the St. Anne's Chapel since 2007, the altarpiece of which was transferred to the Church of St. Joseph.

Nave and choir

The main nave is connected by a wide arch with the slightly elevated choir, which is spanned by a ridge vault. The aisle is separated from the nave by two columns with cube capitals. The main nave is covered with a wooden round barrel, the side aisle with a wooden flat ceiling.

The floor of the interior is covered with travertine slabs. The brightly plastered room is dependent on electrical lighting because of the relatively small arched windows and the glazing of the portals in a strong green color.

Furnishing

The altar is set back by three steps in the choir. It is made from Westerwald trachyte by Sepp Hürten, who also created the altar cross in 1971, the ambo from Westerwald trachyte and sedilia in 1975 , the tabernacle stele in 1984 and the Way of the Cross in 1992 . The altar cross made of bronze with a gold body is set with precious stone ornaments at the ends of the cross. The tabernacle stele on the front wall of the side aisle includes an older tabernacle made of gold-plated sheet metal by Jakob Riffeler. The font with black marble stele and hemispherical basin made of red veined marble is part of the original furnishings. The figures of the four evangelists have been attached to the choir walls since 1999 . The windows in the nave show various stylized saints, the choir windows depict scenes from the life of Jesus. The organ from 1956 was supplied by the Weimbs organ workshop .

Bells

The church has three bells. The oldest is the St. Anna bell from 1926, which survived the church fire in 1942, the others, the Christ Rex bell and the Marien bell, were built in 1956, as was the St. Anna bell, in the Edelbrock bell foundry poured into Gescher. The chimes are: 1956 Christ Rex - bell: g'-2.1956 Marien - bell: b'-2, 1926 Anna - bell: c '' - 2. The motif of the bells is based on the " Te Deum ".
