The lärbro church is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Forsa and to the pastorate Lärbro in the Diocese of Visby .

location

It is located in Lärbro on Gotland, 34 km northeast of Visby .

Church building

This Gothic church differs from the other Gotland country churches in that it has an octagonal tower. Lärbro Church was built in stages. The oldest part is the choir and nave , which were probably built in the late 13th century.

The tower, possibly inspired by the Church of the Holy Spirit in Visby , was built around 1350. Its portal is decorated with figures of saints. The childhood of Jesus is depicted on the capitals . In the remaining parts, figurative gargoyles can be seen. The tower had a gallery floor and a high spire. It was badly damaged by a storm in 1522. Since then the spire has had its lower, today's octagonal shape.

inner space

In the church, the tower, nave and choir, connected by wide arches, form a unit. Slender hollow pillars support the roof. The church was once richly decorated. Today, some frescoes from the end of the 13th century, such as the tendrils in the vault and the apostles with consecration crosses in the choir and nave, have been resurrected as fragments. A turned chair from the 13th century is in the choir, as is a confessional from the 17th century. The winged altar from the early 15th century was restored in the mid-18th century, with many figures of saints being rearranged. The pulpit, probably created by Christian Fedder, dates from 1718. The stalls also come from this time, while the baptism was made in the 17th century. In the floor of the choir is the tombstone of Nicolaus Taksten, who died in 1274. He is said to have been a cruel man. In any case, the tombstone asks to complain about his crimes.

Surroundings

From the churchyard wall, a rising Kastal from the 12th century. Similar towers can be found near the churches of Gammelgarn and Sundre (round tower).
