The Einöde Kirchthalmühle is located in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land , directly on the border with the Upper Palatinate to the east and belongs to the municipality of Alfeld .

location

The Kirchthalmühle is relatively remote in a narrow brook valley, at an altitude of about 425 meters. It is surrounded by steep rock faces, which in places tower over the valley floor by almost 180 meters. The church valley walls, which are just east of the wasteland, are also used as climbing rocks.

history

The name of the mill goes back to a small pilgrimage chapel that had existed nearby at the beginning of the 16th century. The chapel stood by a spring pot a little further south and was therefore called the “Chapel of the Holy Well”. The name Kirchtal for the Bachtal, in which the Kirchthalmühle was later built, was derived from this. The mill was not built until after 1717, in a place a little below the former location of the chapel. It was used as a grain mill until the second half of the 19th century. This was followed by the conversion to a guesthouse and restaurant, but this use was also discontinued in 1998. The inn was not resumed until twelve years later, together with a small beer garden. In 2015 the operation was stopped again and is currently inactive.

Archaeological finds

In the Kirchthalmühlhöhle, which is close to the wilderness, excavations from 1914 onwards uncovered and salvaged a large number of settlement finds. They come mainly from the Middle Neolithic , but also from other epochs (Late and Young Neolithic, Bronze, Urnfield and Hallstatt Period).
