Kirk Jon Urso (born March 6, 1990 in Downers Grove , Illinois - † August 5, 2012 in Columbus , Ohio ) was an American football player .
Career
Amateur career
Urso began playing soccer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . In 2011 he was in the selection of the NSCAA All-South Region First Team, where he played 80 of 91 games. He scored 15 goals and 24 assists. He spent one semester each training for the Bolton Wanderers and Borussia Dortmund .
Club career
On March 1, 2012, he was signed by the MLS franchise Columbus Crew . After a groin injury, he missed the games in May 2012.
National team
For the U-17 national team of the United States , he completed two games at the 2007 U-17 World Cup . The first game in the 2-0 win against Belgium , where he scored a goal and the second in the 2-1 knockout knockout knockout points against Germany .
death
On the morning of August 5, 2012, Urso collapsed and passed out in Columbus . He was taken to the nearby Ohio Health-Grant Medical Center and suffered cardiac arrest . There he died at the age of 22 despite several attempts at resuscitation.
The autopsy revealed that he had arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVCM) .
Shortly thereafter, the Crew Soccer Foundation set up a Kirk Urso Memorial Fund .
On August 19, 2014, there was a Kirk Urso memorial game against the University of North Carolina in Columbus. The proceeds went to the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund, which is committed to developing and supporting adolescent cardiac health research.
