Kirkmichael is a village in the Scottish Council Area South Ayrshire or in the traditional county of Ayrshire . It is located around eleven kilometers south of Ayr and 18 kilometers northeast of Girvan on the Dyrock Burn stream .

history

The place name is derived from a Michaeliskirche at the location. The Scottish King Robert the Bruce made this subordinate to Whithorn Priory in 1325 . Today's Kirkmichael Parish Church was built in 1787 at the same location. With the exception of historical gravestones, there are no remains of the medieval church.

Tower House Cloncaird Castle had been located to the southeast since the 16th century . It was expanded into a mansion in the 1810s and later served as a nursing home and school. Kirkmichael House , located on the southern edge of Kirkmichael, dates from the late 16th or early 17th century . The mansion is also based on a tower house. The pigeon tower was probably built by Kirkmichael in 1762 . Today the structure is classified as a monument of the highest category A.

While between 1861 and 1891 the population of Kirkmichael gradually decreased from 463 to 310, the 1991 census survey counted 647 inhabitants in the village.
