Kjeld Matthiessen

Kjeld Matthiessen (born July 21, 1930 in Bad Oldesloe ; † February 26, 2010 in Lübeck ) was a German classical philologist .

After studying in Kiel , Tübingen , Münster and Hamburg he put in Hamburg in 1960, the first state examination and was on January 6, 1961 while Bruno Snell Dr. phil. PhD . From 1960 to 1965 he was employed in Hamburg as a research assistant at the Lexicon of the Early Greek Epic . A research trip took him to Italy in 1962/63. In 1965 he went to the Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Münster as an assistant, where, after a research stay at the Center for Hellenic Studies (1968–1969), he qualified as a professor in 1970 and was made an adjunct professor in 1972. From 1973 to 1976 he was Vice Rector for Teaching and Student Affairs at the university. In 1995 he retired.

Matthiessens main research interests include the early Greek epic and the Greek tragedy, especially Euripides .

Matthiessen died on February 26, 2010 at the age of 79 in Lübeck.
