Breeding history

The Kladruber are a breed of horse that was bred for ceremonial occasions. A distinction was made between court ceremonies - for which only white horses were bred - and church ceremonies - for which only black horses were bred. The ancestors of the Kladruber were selected accordingly. Only large, impressive horses with an innate demeanor and proud demeanor were considered for breeding. Breeding was originally based on Spanish and Italian horses, which Maximilian II imported in 1552. The official founding of the Kladruby nad Labem stud was on April 14, 1579 by Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg , making Kladruby one of the oldest studs in Europe.

The gray go back to the Neapolitan stallion Imperatore , whereby the two descendant lines Generale and Generalissimus were created. Black horses have their origins in two Italian stallions owned by the Marquis Sacramoso. In order to maintain the color, the Friesian stallion Romke had to be included in the breeding, Shagya Arabs and Lipizzaners were also crossed. This led to the fact that today's Kladruber is smaller and more elegant looking.
