The Klagenfurt Mobil GmbH (short KMG , formerly Stadtwerke (STW) Mobility and Stadtwerke - Verkehrsbetriebe) operates the public transport in Klagenfurt . On September 26, 2018, the mobility division of Stadtwerke Klagenfurt AG was spun off into this newly created company. Stadtwerke Klagenfurt AG holds 74% of KMG, the remaining 26% are owned directly by the City of Klagenfurt.

timeline

The goals of founding Klagenfurt Mobil GmbH are to make the route network more attractive, in particular by increasing the number of cycles, as well as converting the bus fleet to alternative drive types . Over the next few years, five main lines, each running every 10 minutes, are to be introduced step by step, identified by the letters A to E. In addition, there should be eight secondary lines, which will continue to be designated with numbers.

Klagenfurt Mobil GmbH was presented to the public on June 19, 2019 with the new stickers of two articulated buses in turquoise, the key color of KMG. As a funny gesture, a bus (car 17) was covered with eyelashes over the headlights and christened "Frau Klagenfurt". The other bus (car 19) was stuck on a mustache and thus became "Mr. Klagenfurt". Step by step, all buses are to be colored turquoise instead of the previously beige base color with a red muzzle and, in some cases, to be covered with eyelashes and beards.

Line B between the main train station and Welzenegg was the first line to go into operation every 10 minutes on September 9, 2019 . For the first time since 1995, a line in Klagenfurt is again designated with a letter. In addition, the stop of line B at Heiligengeistplatz (stand 3) was the only one to be colored from red to turquoise.

Line network

A new bus network has been in operation since February 14, 2011 and has been further developed since then. In contrast to the old one, the new line network is more geared towards diameter lines. The line network is also connected to the Carinthia S-Bahn network and regional buses. In addition to the central transfer point at Heiligengeistplatz, which has existed for decades, there has been a second junction at the main train station since February 14, 2011. On December 14, 2014, new changes to the route network came into effect, with improvements in the Waidmannsdorf district and the evening cycle (45 instead of the previous 60 minutes). In the course of the Europe-wide timetable change on December 13, 2015, the municipality of Ebenthal was assigned to city traffic. A ring line system (lines 12 and 22) was introduced that leads from Heiligengeistplatz via Ebenthaler Straße or Hörtendorf to Gurnitz. Within the municipality of Ebenthal, an additional ticket must be purchased to travel on these lines, as the “ Verkehrsverbund Kärnten ” tariff applies here. For sparsely populated areas in the Ebenthal community outside of the new lines, a call system (“micro-public transport”) was introduced by STW on January 7, 2016. Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., after a prior call, a minibus (called "Mobil-E") will take you from certain specified points within the community to other points or to the STW stops. In addition to other smaller timetable changes, the Fischl district has also been served on Sundays since December 13, 2015.

In the summer of 2016, the city of Klagenfurt announced plans to run line 31 only to Mantschehofgasse and no longer to Wölfnitz . The resulting poorer basic cycle for the Wölfnitz district (from 15 to 30 minutes) as well as the changed routing caused resentment among the population. A citizens' initiative was finally able to negotiate with the city that line 31 would continue to run to Wölfnitz at peak times. However, since the decision to discontinue the line section had already been made in the local council from October 16, the emergency paragraph had to be put into effect for a short time until it was repealed on October 18 to operate the line. To compensate for line 31, line 33, which now runs crossed with line 30, was introduced. Furthermore, with the timetable change of October 16, 2016, the line 62 introduced in December 2014, which ran between the university and the specially created S-Bahn station Klagenfurt West , was discontinued due to very low passenger numbers (often referred to as the "ghost bus "). This route is now also served by line 60.

The new line 15 was created on July 3, 2017. It runs between Stauderplatz (located southwest of Heiligengeistplatz) and the Klagenfurt West S-Bahn station via Koschatstrasse and Anzengruberstrasse. The approach to the S-Bahn stops Klagenfurt Lend and Klagenfurt West as well as the Park & Ride parking lots at Minimundus and Klagenfurt West is intended to make public transport more attractive, especially for commuters. The line is operated Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The new line B has been in operation since September 9, 2019. The route starts from the main train station to Heiligengeistplatz and then continues on the route of the previous line 61 (which was shortened to Heiligengeistplatz) to Welzenegg. The line runs every 10 minutes throughout the day (except in the morning and evening every 20 minutes). Since then, line 43 no longer serves the section between Heiligengeistplatz and Hauptbahnhof due to the coverage by line B and is therefore the only line that does not go to Heiligengeistplatz. To this end, it was extended from the FH Kärnten to Liberogasse, where the regional museum's alternative quarters have been located since the beginning of October 2019. The new section has been served since December 2019 after construction work has been completed.

Vehicle fleet

In the summer of 2004, 19 articulated buses (car numbers 1–19) of the type Man NG 313 replaced the old Gräf Stift 242 M18 . So since 2004 only modern low-floor buses have been used. In mid-2009, the green destination display on a MAN NG 313 with wagon number 16 was changed to orange. In autumn 2010, 12 (car numbers 21–32) solo buses of the type MAN 223 NL were exchanged for new ones of the type Mercedes-Benz Citaro . From November 2011, the remaining 20 (car numbers 33-52) MAN solo buses were replaced by the Mercedes model. An old MAN solo bus (car 53, until 2011 48) was still in use until 2016. The orange destination display is standard on the new solo buses. In December 2015, one of these buses (car 23) was equipped with a white destination display for test purposes, which was chosen as standard for the new buses from 2017. The stop announcements in the buses were recorded by the former ORF presenter Brigitte West and have been informing passengers about the next stops and transfer options since December 1st, 2007. In March 2008, an info screen with information about daily events and the next stop was installed in the 19 articulated buses and the two three-axle buses that were used from 2004 to 2016 (car numbers 61 and 62) . At the beginning of 2016, the Mercedes solo buses were also equipped with particularly wide-format info screens (29-inch model), where the next three stops are displayed. In addition to the vehicles already mentioned, the fleet also includes three Mercedes midibuses (car numbers 66–68) with a length of ten meters and, since July 2013, an electric midibus (car 77) of the Solaris Urbino 8.9 LE electric type . A fourth Citaro Midibus with the number 65 was sold to MVG in Leoben a few years ago. There it is still in use as car 11 with the registration number "BM 8 EVM". In addition, buses from other federal states or states (especially from Germany ) are used on a test basis for a certain period of time. In the course of the European Football Championship in 2008 , 17 older MAN articulated buses of the type MAN NG 272 (2) were taken over from Linz. While most of these buses were eliminated after the event, four (car numbers 81–83 and 88) remained in service until the end of 2016. They were used in particular as booster buses at peak times. Car 88 is preserved for posterity today by the "Busfreunde Klagenfurt" and is available for special trips.

Since January 9, 2017, six new articulated buses (cars 1–6) of the Mercedes Citaro type have been part of the fleet. These are particularly quiet, have a white display with LED light sensor technology and two parking spaces for prams and wheelchairs. They also meet the highest emissions standard Euro 6 and have a turning circle that is one meter shorter. The MAN buses replaced by this will initially continue to be in use and have been given the car numbers 71 to 76. At the end of 2017, it was decided to lease 15 more new articulated buses worth around 5.2 million euros. These 15 buses were delivered in September 2018. They are equipped with ten USB ports per car so that smartphones can be charged while driving. They carry the car numbers 7 to 20 and 61. For a short time, as with earlier conversions, old and new vehicles with the same car number were on the road in parallel. Eleven of the old MAN NG 313 buses with the numbers 7 to 19 as well as two 3-door buses of the same type (car 60 and 63) from abroad, which served as amplifiers from 2016, were retired. Car 9 was renumbered to 69, car 10 to 70, car 18 to 73 and car 19 to 71. These trolleys, plus trolleys 72 and 74-76, are still in use. The earlier cars 71 (ex. Wagon 1) and 73 (ex. Wagon 3) have been retired. The original car 1 was the only series 1-19 bus that was still produced in Salzgitter and was built in 2003. The buses 2-19 were built in 2004.

Vehicle list

This list is as of March 2020. However, since buses are repeatedly exchanged or renumbered, complete accuracy cannot be guaranteed.

Unless otherwise stated, all buses are painted beige, articulated buses 4-door and 18 meters long, three-axle buses 3-door and 15 meters long, solo buses 3-door and 12 meters long and midibuses 2-door and 10 meters long. The red paintwork at the very front (on the "snout") was changed to turquoise on individual vehicles from mid-2019 and on all Citaro articulated buses at the beginning of 2020.

Others

On April 10, 2019, due to the measles disease of a bus driver, all KMG bus traffic was suspended for a few hours from noon. The buses were disinfected. From 4 p.m. the night lines ran every hour. On April 11th, apart from a few failures in school traffic, the timetable was back to running.
