timeline

In 1940 the STW was founded by merging the individual municipal operations of the electricity works, water works, transport companies, baths, burials and billboards. District heating was added in 1949 with the first district heating power plant in Austria. In 1949 the gas works, which was badly damaged in World War II, was taken over by the Klagenfurt municipal utilities and put into operation in 1952. Since then, Klagenfurt has had a three-track energy supply.

In 1967 the Bad Maiernigg was handed over to the Klagenfurt municipal utilities and presented itself in new splendor as early as 1969. In 1972 the indoor swimming pool in Klagenfurt was opened.

In 1998 the establishment of a fiber optic cable network and the establishment of the telecommunications business area began. This network is used today by all telecom operators.

In 2000 the company was converted into a stock corporation. In 2003, the Maria Loretto lido was bought by Stadtwerke Klagenfurt AG and continued to operate as a public lido. In 2005 the company AQUAssist was founded, a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Klagenfurt AG, which deals with the areas of pipe network maintenance, optimization of water supply systems and services in the water sector.

At the end of 2005, the energy sectors electricity, gas and district heating were incorporated into Energie Klagenfurt GmbH. The 49% partner is the strong Austrian energy supplier Österreichische Elektrizitätswirtschafts-AG . A subsidiary called KEG (Kraftwerkerrichtungs und -betriebs GmbH) was founded for the realization of the gas steam power plant (GDK) Klagenfurt. At the beginning of 2013, the STW Group bought back the 49% shares from Verbund. The EKG is therefore a 100% Carinthian company. A biomass power plant for the district heating supply is currently being planned and built.

In 2006 Veolia Wasser GmbH (45% stake) and aqua consult Ingenieur GmbH (6% stake) were brought into the AQUAssist as strategic partners.

In 2007 the previous STW “Advertising” division and Gewista (49% stake) merged to form PosterService GmbH (PSG). PSG offers modern and classic advertising media in urban areas. The Gewista shares were taken over by Ankünder.

In January 2008, the two funerals in Klagenfurt and Villach merged to form Bestattung Kärnten GmbH. In May 2008 the shipping sector became a private company, Wörthersee Schifffahrt GmbH. This has (as of June 2017) a total of five ships: the Thalia, the Klagenfurt, the Carinthia, the Velden (ex Wiesbaden) and the electrically operated ES Maria Wörth.

In 2010 AQUAssist Wasser Service GmbH is liquidated.
