Klara Nahrstedt (born June 17, 1957 in Bratislava , Slovakia ) is a computer scientist and professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champ .

Career

Nahrstedt studied mathematics and numerical analysis at the Humboldt University in Berlin . She then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Computer Science at the Humboldt University in Berlin, at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin and at the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA. She received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in the USA in 1995.

In 1995 she moved to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the USA, where she was appointed professor in 2005. In 2003 she was a visiting scientist at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department at the University of California, Berkeley and in 2004 at the Electrical Engineering Department at the Technical University of Darmstadt .

Since 2015 she has been director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champ.

research

Nahrstedt researches distributed systems and networks with a focus on multimedia technology and real-time applications . She developed the basics of the Quality of Service (QoS) concept (the so-called "QoS Broker") for multimedia systems, such as peer-to-peer streaming, Voice-over-IP and telepresence and has contributed to the quality of to improve these applications by prioritizing the corresponding data packets when they are forwarded in the network.

Another research focus of her is security and data protection, e.g. B. for the real-time security of wireless networks in critical infrastructures such as B. Power grids , for health systems, for 3D tele-immersion systems . She is working on ways to securely connect outdated scientific instruments to networks or cloud technologies .

She is also working on developing the next generation of protocols for initiating, managing and distributing sessions from telepresence systems and applications.

Textbooks

Nahrstedt wrote several textbooks on multimedia technologies, some of which are standard works in teaching.
