Ralf Steinmetz

Ralf Steinmetz (born July 31, 1956 in Santiago de Chile , Chile ) is a German computer scientist and electrical engineer . He works as a professor for multimedia communication at the Technical University of Darmstadt .

Life

Steinmetz studied electrical engineering at the TU Darmstadt, where he received his doctorate in 1986 on the subject of modularized Petri networks for the description and analysis of communications systems with meshed information processing structures .

After further activities in research and management at Philips and IBM from 1987 to 1996, Steinmetz completed his habilitation in 1994 at the computer science department of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main on the subject of multimedia technology: basics, components and systems . In 1996 he was appointed to a newly established endowed professorship for industrial process and system communication from the Volkswagen Foundation at TU Darmstadt. Steinmetz also took over the management of a GMD research center for information systems from 1996 to 2000 and, in his role as institute director, accompanied the transfer to a Fraunhofer institute. In 1999 he founded the Hessian Telemedia Technology Competence Center (httc eV), of which he is chairman of the board.

Since 1996, Steinmetz has a C4 - professorship at Darmstadt Technical University in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology held and a second member on department of computer science . Since October 2001 he has been head of the multimedia communication department.

In 2005 Steinmetz was appointed as a member of the technology advisory board of the Hessen Agency and as the representative for information and communication technology of the Hessian state government.

From 2006 to 2012 he was the spokesman for the newly founded DFG research group "Improving the quality of peer-to-peer systems through the systematic research of quality features and their mutual dependencies". In 2012 Steinmetz played a key role in establishing the DFG Collaborative Research Center 1053 MAKI at the TU Darmstadt , of which he has been spokesman since 2013. In this context he deals intensively with the future of the Internet with regard to the concept of transition . He also manifests this as spokesman for the profile area Internet and digitization at TU Darmstadt .

At the university assembly of the TU Darmstadt, Steinmetz represents the professors group for high-performance universities .

In August 2018 Steinmetz was appointed to the Council for Digital Ethics by the Hessian state government .

Services

In the eighties Steinmetz coined and sharpened the term multimedia in the professional world. He did fundamental work in the field of synchronicity perception in multimedia streams. At the chair of multimedia communication, Steinmetz works with over 30 researchers to realize his vision of real seamless multimedia communication . His research interests include, among other things, the Communication Services areas, IT Architectures, Knowledge media, mobile networking, networked gaming , Network Mechanisms & QoS , Peer-to-Peer Networking, Network Security & Trust and Rechnerallgegenwart (Engl. Ubiquitous computing ).

Publications

Steinmetz has contributed significantly to more than 900 publications and wrote several textbooks on multimedia technologies, some of which are standard works in teaching.
