Klaus-Wolfgang Klein

Klaus-Wolfgang Klein (born November 23, 1933 in Königsberg (Prussia) ; † June 12, 1993 in Bad Pyrmont ) was major general of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) and head of the Central Medical Service (ZMD) of the State Security. He was also head of the department at Greifswald University Hospital .

Life

Born in Königsberg as the son of a bookseller and a housewife, Klaus-Wolfgang Klein first graduated from high school. Between 1952 and 1957 he studied medicine at the universities of Leipzig and Greifswald (there at the military medical section). From 1957 he was a compulsory assistant in the Bad Saarow army hospital and from 1958 a troop doctor . In 1960 he completed his specialist training and was then senior physician and head of department at the Greifswald University Hospital. In 1962 he joined the SED . In 1967 he was employed as a specialist in internal medicine at the MfS Medical Service . In 1970 he was appointed second deputy head, 1974 deputy head, before he took over the management of the ZMD from 1986 as the successor to Günter Kempe . As such, he was responsible for the medical care of the full-time employees of the Ministry of State Security. His duties also included managing the hospital in Berlin-Buch , the Berlin-Lichtenberg polyclinic and the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen detention hospital . In 1987 he was appointed major general. In the course of the dissolution of the Stasi he was released in 1990.
