Klaus Baltzer

Klaus Baltzer (born March 3, 1928 in Hamburg ; † September 6, 2017 in Deisenhofen ) was a German Protestant theologian and professor of Old Testament theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Life

Baltzer, the son of a doctor from Hamburg, attended the humanistic Wilhelm Dörpfeld Gymnasium in Wuppertal from 1936 , where he graduated from high school in 1947. After two semesters of studying Protestant theology at the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal (1947/48), canon law and philosophy at the University of Tübingen (1948/49) and theology and medicine in Heidelberg (1948–1951) and theology in Bonn In 1952 he passed the first theological exam in Düsseldorf . From 1952 to 1953 there was a vicariate in Dierdorf and in 1954 an assistant to Gerhard von Rad at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . Baltzer received his doctorate in 1957 and habilitated in 1959 on the two-part work Das Bundesformular . He was a professor at the Garrett Biblical Institute in Evanston (Illinois) from 1962 to 1963 and was appointed to the Bethel Church College in 1963 .

After the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich was founded in 1967 with five professors, Baltzer was appointed as the first holder of the chair for Old Testament theology. His first lecture in 1968 dealt with the subject of "Texts on the History of Prophecy". He held this position until his retirement in 1996 and then remained connected to the Ludwig Maximilians University. In 1971/72 and 1988/89 he was dean of the Evangelical Theological Faculty. From 1977 to 1996 he was a member of the regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . Until recently he lived in Munich.

He became known through his extensive commentary on Deutero-Isaiah (Isaiah 40-55). He was co-editor of the US commentary series Hermeneia (Fortress), in which his commentary appeared in English translation. As a member of the research and translation project Septuaginta German , he was responsible for Isa 40–55. Numerous doctoral and post-doctoral students from a number of countries, including Japan and India, have been supervised by him.
