Klaus Herber (born September 24, 1958 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper. In 1983 he played with Chemie Böhlen in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

Klaus Herber played his first men's games for TSG MAB Schkeuditz in the third-rate Leipzig district league . In 1977 he became district champion with the team and rose with her to the GDR league . After he had stood in the Schkeuditz goal in seven GDR league games up to October 1977, he was drafted into the National People's Army for military service in November . There he was able to continue playing football in the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Dessau in the GDR league. But he couldn't get past Thomas Alscher , so that Herber only made seven league appearances during his time in the army.

In 1980 he joined the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Böhlen, but initially only played in the regional league team or in the junior league . Only when Chemie Böhlen was relegated from the league in 1981, Herber was included in the squad of the first team for the GDR league season 1981/82. There he was only the second goalkeeper behind Freimuth Bott and was only called up in nine of the 22 point games. Böhlen returned to the league after a year, where Herber played seven league games at the end of the season in 1982/83 instead of Bott. The BSG Chemie failed to stay up and played again in the GDR league in 1983/84. Since Bott had finished his career, Herber was named number one in the BSG goal and made ten league appearances in the first half of the season.

After the winter break he moved to the GDR league club Motor Babelsberg , where he initially replaced the third goalkeeper Thomas Wendorff. Until the summer of 1984 Herber only played twice in the GDR league. For the 1984/85 season he was nominated as the second goalkeeper behind Rainer Köpnick , but with 22 appearances in the 34-round season, he won the regular place in goal. He was able to defend this in the two following seasons by playing 47 of the 68 point games. Herber was again nominated as the first goalkeeper for the 1987/88 season, but could only play nine league games and was replaced by the newcomer Olaf Ludwig. At the end of the season, Klaus Herber, almost 30 years old, ended his career in competitive sports. Since 1977 he had played seven league games and 113 games in the GDR league.
