Klaus Kern (physical chemist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klaus Kern (born March 24, 1960 in Deesen ) is a German physical chemist , director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart and professor of physics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

Live and act

Kern studied chemistry and physics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ; in 1986 he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD . He then worked at Forschungszentrum Jülich of the Helmholtz Association (1986–1990) and at Bell Laboratories (1988), Alcatel-Lucent's research and development department in Murray Hill , New Jersey , USA. In 1991 he received a call as professor of experimental physics at the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. Since 1998 he has been Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research. Since 2000 he has been an honorary professor at the University of Konstanz . In 2008 he was accepted as a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

His main research interests are the nanosciences , self-ordering phenomena, physics and chemistry of surfaces and interfaces as well as scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy . The smallest atomic and molecular structures are the focus of his research. With tiny probes he explores the interplay between atoms and molecules and hunts down the functional principles on which nature's blueprints are based. Kern is the author of more than 600 scientific articles. He belongs to the small group of scientists worldwide with an h -index over 100 ( Google Scholar ).
