After his discharge from military service, the 1.76 m tall dad joined 1. FC Union Berlin, who had just been relegated from the GDR league. His first league game for the Berliners he played on the 1st matchday of the GDR League North at 0-1 at BSG KKW Nord Greifswald on August 24, 1969. By the end of the 1969/70 season, the Union returned to the league managed, Papies was only used in eight of the 30 league games. In the league season 1970/71 he had to wait until the 11th game day before he came to his first league use. In the match between 1. FC Union and Stahl Riesa (1-0) on November 18, 1970, he was called up as a right defender. In the second half of the season, Papies made twelve appearances in 13 point games to make it into the starting line-up, where he found his place on the left side of defense.

From April 1972 coach Harald Seeger put him in left midfield, and Papies usually kept this position until the end of his career at Union. In the three seasons 1973/74 to 1975/76 he had to play again in the GDR league after relegation. Due to a serious injury that he sustained in May 1973, Papies was only able to play 29 of the 90 point and relegation games in these three years. Also in the new league season 1976/77 he was only used regularly in the second half series, but was then able to consolidate his status as a regular player for the next two years. At the beginning of the 1979/80 season, Papies was almost 32 years old. Although officially nominated for the 1st team, it was only used once there. The match on the 4th match day on September 1, 1979 1. FC Union - FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt (2: 1), in which he only played the last eleven minutes, was his last competitive game for the Unioner's 1st team. So he had come within ten seasons to 173 competitive games, of which he played 119 in the league and scored three goals. He scored a fourth goal in a cup game in 1972.

Even after the end of his career as a soccer player, Papies stayed with the soccer sport. While still a sports teacher student, he became the trainer for the GDR league club BSG KWO Berlin in the 1980/81 season , and then a junior coach at 1. FC Union. In 1988 he returned for a year to the BSG KWO, with which he reached the Berlin district championship and the return to the GDR league. He then became a junior coach at the Berlin training center in Friedrichshain.
