Klaus Zieschang

Klaus Zieschang (born October 3,  1939 in Freital ) is a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Zieschang first grew up in Dresden . After graduating from high school in Sulzbach-Rosenberg in 1960, Zieschang studied  sport, German, pedagogy and psychology for teaching at the University of Würzburg until 1965 . As an athlete, he played football, boxing and handball in the clubs TuS Rosenberg and TG Zell. In 1967 he was appointed as a study assessor and then worked as a university professor at the Institute for Physical Education at the University of Würzburg while he was writing his doctoral thesis (title: “From the shooting festival to the gymnastics festival”), which he completed in 1974 with the title “summa cum laude”.

From 1975 Zieschang worked at the University of Bayreuth , where he built structures for the sports science course and university sports. In 1979 he was appointed professor to the chair for sports science I at the University of Bayreuth and was later, for several terms, managing director of the institute for sports science at the University of Bayreuth. For a time, Zieschang was in charge of the working group of sports institutes at the Bavarian state universities. Another milestone in his university career was the establishment of the sports economics course in 1985 , making the University of Bayreuth a pioneer throughout Germany.

From 1990 to 1993, Zieschang, as a founding member of the Technical University of Chemnitz-Zwickau, was in charge of the creation of the new sports science teaching and research structures. He then concentrated again on his activities at the University of Bayreuth, where he was dean of the Faculty of Cultural Studies in 1998 and 1999.

From 1994 and until 1998 he had a seat on the board of the European Association for Sport Management (EASM) and during this period was also part of the editorial collective of the European Journal for Sport Management.

From 1995 to 1999 he was chairman of the German Association for Sports Science (DVS). In 2005, the DVS awarded him the Golden Badge of Honor.

In 2001, Zieschang was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to sports science , and in 2003 he was awarded the Bavarian Sports Prize in the “Innovation in Sport” category. In 2005 Zieschang retired and in 2011 the European Association for Sports Management made him an honorary member.

In addition to topics of sports economy such as advertising, sports tourism, sports facility construction, sports games, athletics and aspects of training control were also part of Zieshang's research areas.
