The small poplar glass-winged butterfly ( Paranthrene tabaniformis ) is a butterfly from the glass-winged family . The species is also known as a horsefly swarm .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 25 to 32 millimeters. Like the hornet hawk, this species imitates defensive insects. This behavior indirectly protects it. One speaks of mimicry . In contrast to most members of his family, the forewings are not transparent, but gray in color. You can recognize this species by the four yellow rings on the otherwise deep blue colored body. Like the brakes , it usually flies in the warm hours of midday.

Subspecies

  • Paranthrene tabaniformis synagriformis
  • Paranthrene tabaniformis tabaniformis

distribution

The species is widespread in Europe (to southern Fennoscandia ), North Africa, Asia and North America ( USA , southern Canada ). In the vertical distribution, the small poplar glass winged can be found at heights between 100 and 200 meters. In the foothills of the Alps it rises up to 600 meters and in the Black Forest ( Titisee ) it reaches the currently known upper limit. However, this species is difficult to discover, so the exact distribution area is not known.

Habitat

You can find the small poplar glass winged in floodplains, stream valleys, poplar plantations and parks with water.
