After a brief armed conflict with Appenzell Landsknechten (1405), who advanced across the Arlberg to Imst , and also as a result of disputes between the ducal brothers Leopold IV and Ernst the Iron , 21 knights in North and South Tyrol united to form an aristocratic union around their professional rights both against the Tyrolean Prince Duke Friedrich IV and against the Governor Heinrich VI. of Rottenburg to defend.

As a federal badge, the members wore a silver elephant on their chest, perhaps in memory of an animal that was introduced in western Germany at that time, and called the union the “Elefantenbund”. It was closed on August 23, 1406 for five years and had a statute consisting of several articles (federal charter), which explained the purpose of the covenant in the first article and was constituted under the leadership of Vogts Ulrich von Mätsch, Count von Kirchberg the Elder .

The other 20 members of the Federation were:

  • Pretlinus of Caldes
  • Ulrich von Eglsee zu Feigenstein
  • Hans von Firmian († 1440), husband of N. von Liechtenstein
  • Karl von Firmian
  • Viktor von Firmian, brother of the above
  • Alphart von Goldegg (Goldegger) († before 1446)
  • Georg von Goldegg (Goldegger), brother of the above
  • Martin von Jäger the Elder
  • Eckhard von Liebenberger zu Völlenperg, district judge in the Inn Valley, husband of Elisabeth-Anna von Seidl
  • Paul Peter Eckhard von Liebenberger zu Völlenperg, brother of the above
  • Ulrich von Mätsch , Count von Kirchberg, the younger
  • Joachim von Montani († 1460), teacher in Nauders , provost of St. Afra, husband of Dorothea von Griesingen
  • Caspar Schenkh von Metz , from the Haselburg near Bozen , Erblandmundschenk
  • Georg von Villanders († 1446), keeper of St. Lamprechtsburg, husband of Maria von Cles
  • Hanns von Völseck
  • Konrad von Wolkenstein , husband of Margarethe von Schenk
  • Oswald von Wolkenstein (* around 1377–1445), poet and politician
  • Georg Zörrer from Harrenstein
  • Leopold Hanns Zwingenstein from Salleck
  • NN Zwingenstein von Salleck, brother of the above

The elephant union lasted only seven months, until March 23, 1407. It was replaced by the falcon union . Its founder, ironically, was the violent Henry VI. von Rottenburg , court master of Tyrol. Most of the members of the elephant union joined the new one.
