Two-wheel mechanic is a recognized occupation in Germany. In Switzerland, the basic vocational training courses are called EFZ bicycle mechanics and EFZ motorcycle mechanics . Since November 1, 2014, there has been a gradual conversion to two-wheel mechatronics in Germany .

Germany

Nationwide, he goes through a 3½-year training in industry or craft, where he can specialize in bicycle technology or motorcycle technology.

Two-wheel mechanics maintain, repair and manufacture spare parts for mainly motorized or non-motorized two-wheelers and special vehicles such as B. wheelchairs but also garden tools and sewing machines. In addition to mechanics, the training also includes vehicle electrics (in contrast to vehicle mechanics, vehicle electricians). They advise customers, procure, present and sell goods and services. They also equip two-wheelers with accessories and additional equipment or convert them according to customer requirements.

After a restructuring of the two-wheel mechanic trade in 1999, the profession is divided into two new areas:

• As a two-wheel mechanic specializing in motorcycle technology, you deal with motorized two-wheelers and, in addition to the tasks mentioned, test engines - usually internal combustion engines and electric motor-driven ones - and their subsystems, maintain them and repair them if necessary.

• As a two-wheel mechanic specializing in bicycle technology, they deal with non-motorized two-wheelers or those with internal combustion engines Saxonette (bicycles) as well as electrically powered auxiliary motors (e-bikes) that are equipped with electric motors - and, if necessary, also manufacture complete vehicles from individual components.

Historically, the two-wheel mechanic's profession is closely linked to sewing machine technology , as the two- wheeled industry emerged from sewing machine factories, which is reflected in the term "bicycle and sewing machine oil" , which is still used today, for the commonly used lubricant . As a result of this history of development, there was a uniform apprenticeship "mechanic (sewing machine and two-wheel mechanic)" in Germany from 1964 to 1989 .

Switzerland

In Switzerland, bicycle mechanic EFZ , small motorcycle and bicycle mechanic EFZ and motorcycle mechanic EFZ are three different basic vocational training courses.

Bicycle mechanic EFZ

The basic vocational training to become a bicycle mechanic EFZ takes three years.

For cost reasons, they usually replace complete parts instead of repairing them in the event of a defect. Nevertheless, they learn and master basic mechanical skills such as sawing, welding and thread cutting.

Small motorcycle and bicycle mechanic EFZ

The basic vocational training to become a small motorcycle and bicycle mechanic EFZ takes three years.

Motorcycle mechanic EFZ

The basic vocational training to become a motorcycle mechanic EFZ takes four years.

In addition to motorcycles of all kinds, she is responsible for quads, tricycles and sidecars.
