Motorcycle mechanic is a job title for a trained specialist . In Switzerland it is a protected job title that only specialists with a federal specialist certificate (EFZ) are allowed to use.

education

In Switzerland, training to become a two-wheeler specialist is divided into various professions. The Motorradmechanker (EFZ) deals with the maintenance and repair of large-displacement motorcycles . The training lasts four years, the theory comprises 1 to 1½ days per week at the vocational school .

Similarly, the small motorcycle and bicycle mechanic is responsible for small motorcycles such as scooters and mopeds . The bicycle mechanic is specifically only responsible for bicycles . Before 1986, all of these professions were combined in a single apprenticeship as a bicycle and motorcycle mechanic.

Motorcycle mechanics are trained to ensure the driving and roadworthiness , repair and restoration of motorcycles of all kinds, motorcycle combinations , tricycles and 4-wheeled quads and to prepare them for traffic approval.

Workshop work

Motorcycle mechanics carry out work on the frame and chassis , wheels and engines . They check them for wear and tear, accidental damage and age-related deficiencies. An important task is checking and adjusting the steering head bearings and swing arm bearings as well as changing the damper oil , the sealing rings and the guide bushes on telescopic forks and rear wheel suspensions. This includes the batteries as well as the starter, charging and ignition systems . They dismantle, repair and adjust entire engines as well as their individual parts.
