The rock perch ( Ctenolabrus rupestris ) is a type of wrasse that can be found in the north-east Atlantic , the North and Baltic Seas, as well as the Mediterranean and Black Seas . In salmon farms , the fish is used as cleaner fish.

features

The rock perch has a laterally flattened, elongated and slender body and reaches a body length of up to 18 centimeters. The pointed head has a terminal mouth. The rear edge of the gill cover is covered with small, pointed thorns. The back and flanks are brown to reddish in color and drawn by dark rows of dots, the color of the belly side is light. The fish have a dark spot at the front end of the dorsal fin and the upper base of the tail.

The undivided dorsal fin has 16 to 17 hard rays and then 8 to 10 soft rays, the anal fin 3 hard and 7 to 8 soft rays. The pelvic fins are on the chest , the pectoral fin has 15 rays. A total of 35 to 39 scales lie along the sideline .

The rock perch can be found from the north-eastern Atlantic from Norway , Great Britain and the North and Baltic Seas to North Africa as well as in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea .

Way of life

The fish live in the area of ​​algae-covered rocks near the coast such as the Helgoland Felswatt or seaweed and seagrass meadows at depths of up to 20 meters, older animals also up to 50 meters. They feed mainly on bog animals , crustaceans and mollusks .

The breeding season of the fish extends from July to August in the northernmost part of the range, from April to August in the North Sea and from January to July in the Mediterranean. At this time, the males become territorial, the eggs, which are about 1 millimeter in size, are released into the open water and develop in the pelagic area just like the hatching fish larvae . The fish reach sexual maturity after about 2 years with a length of about 8 centimeters, the maximum age is about 8 years.
